I found this on Beancounters, yet another way to expose myself.  Here are the rules of this meme:

1. Pick up the nearest book of at least 123 pages.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the next three sentences, sentences 5-7.
5. Tag five people and post a comment here once you post it to your blog, so I can come see.

The position of women in the family and in society had altered radically during the second decade of the twentieth century: it was a change that had an effect on all areas of a women's lives (actually shows this), but not all women agreed on the value of the process that went with liberation.  The passing of laws on equal opportunities was an improvement for everyone, but many married women thought that the role of the self-supporting woman was being idealized to the detriment of the roles of housewife and mother, both of which they saw as a woman's most noble duty.  The most common attitude -- not, however, shared by all young women -- was that young girls should work only until they got married.

The book is The Feminine Ideal by Marianne Thesander; it was purchased as a souvenir/airplane read at the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid.  And I never finished it but am now obliged to do so.
